About Short Hills, NJ
Short Hills began as a planned community when a successful businessman, Stewart Hartshorn, considered “the father of Short Hills”, purchased 13 acres of land in Millburn Township. Hartshorn wanted to create “a harmonious community for people who appreciated nature,” and “where people of congenial tastes could dwell together.” Hartshorn hired architects to build fine homes to attract like-minded, nature loving home buyers many of whom he personally invited to come live with him in the community. He chose the name “Short Hills” not only because it reflected the geography of the region, but also because that same name was used by the Lenape Indians to describe the region.
In 1923, Short Hills evolved along the lines that its founder envisioned with the creation of The Cora Hartshorn Arboretum and Bird Sanctuary which got its start from 16.5 acres of land gifted to Cora Hartshorn by her father, Stewart Hartshorn. She designed a system of roads and walking paths on undeveloped woodland of oaks, tulip trees, dogwood, and beech. The arboretum now contains 45 species of trees, including 275-year-old tulip trees, as well as rare ferns, over 150 species of wildflowers and 100 species of birds. Cora willed the arboretum to the township when she died in 1958.
Surrounded by 2,100 acres of preserved parkland, Greenwood Gardens is a 28 acre garden with majestic trees, meadows, ponds and cultivated woodlands. Formerly a private retreat with formal Italianate gardens graced by colorful tiles, rustic stone tea houses, mossy-pebbled walks, and vistas stretching for miles into the surrounding wooded hillsides, careful preservation work and imaginative horticulture have returned much of the garden to its original Arts and Crafts design. Greenwood Gardens is endorsed by The Garden Conservancy as a Preservation Project Garden.
Paper Mill Playhouse is the area’s regional theater. Due to its relatively close location to Manhattan, it’s able to draw from a pool of actors who live in New York City. Paper Mill was officially designated as the “State Theater of New Jersey” and has received a Regional Theatre Tony Award.
