About Essex County
Since its inception in 1683, Essex County has had a rich history. With 21 municipalities housing a population of almost 800,000, Essex County is New Jersey’s second most populous county. Most recently, it has been the industrial and financial hub of New Jersey.
After the turn of the century, the central section of the county grew rapidly when trolley lines were built to carry workers from industrial Newark to the less crowded outlying towns, and the area became known as the “trolley car suburbs”. Eventually commuter railroads passed through Newark carrying commuters to Manhattan from suburban towns.
Following the 1929 stock market crash and the enforcement of prohibition, the thriving economy of Essex was temporarily crippled. When prohibition was repealed and many breweries reopened, Essex began another period of rapid growth, and towns such as Livingston, Fairfield, Roseland and the Caldwells became among the county’s fastest growing communities.
In the recent past, the economy shifted from a manufacturing base to a service oriented economy, and the headquarters of corporate giants such as PSE&G, ADP and Prudential located in Essex County. With Newark International Airport and Port Newark located within its borders, Essex County is a national hub with a superior network of rail, highway, air and sea transportation.
The New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark, is an artistic, cultural and civic center that rivals New York City as a showcase for music and dance featuring the world’s best artists. The state’s largest museum, The Newark Museum, holds collections of decorative arts, contemporary art and arts of Asia, Africa, the Americas and the ancient world. Its extensive collections of American art include works by John Singer Sargent, Mary Cassatt, Edward Hopper, Georgia O’Keeffe and Frank Stella.
Welcoming more than 65,000 visitors a year, the Montclair Art Museum is held in high regard as a pioneer, being one of the country’s first museums primarily involved with collecting American art and the first dedicated to the study and creation of a significant Native American art collection.
In 1962, a gentleman named Tjark Reiss, hired to design a zoo, created exhibits based on Hans Christian Anderson’s nursery rhymes and other children’s stories. Turtle Back Zoo, taking its name from a rock formation located on a nearby mountainside, opened with a collection of 140 animals of 40 species. By 1973, the zoo’s animal collection had grown to 850 animals of 275 species. Since, Turtle Back Zoo has become accredited by the American Zoo and Aquarium Association placing It among the elite zoos and aquaria in the country.
Formally created in 1895, Branch Brook Park is the nation’s first county park. The area served as an army training ground during the American Civil War and is now home to over 5,000 cherry blossom trees in more than 18 varieties, making it the largest collection of cherry blossom trees in the United States.
