There is no doubt that the color of a room has a large effect on how you feel when you walk into it. Certain colors can evoke happiness and warmth, while others make you feel slightly melancholy or dark. Studies have been done which prove that the colors we are surrounded with have an effect on what we think and how we feel at the time. One of the most important things to consider when painting any room in your home is what mood you are trying to evoke. Obviously, none of us want to create a room that makes us feel sad or angry, but different colors can evoke different positive emotions.

Red is universally understood as a dramatic color of passion. There is very little chance that the color red will result in a calm or neutral feeling. Red is bold and stirs up emotion. It is a color that raises your energy level. For this reason, a bright red is not the best choice for a bedroom. When choosing a paint color for your bedroom, you want something soothing and calming that you will feel comfortable falling asleep with. However, red is a great option for a dining room or den. These are two rooms where you do not want to feel calm or sleepy. A dining room is where you entertain guests, so some degree of drama and emotion are welcomed. Your den is where you accomplish work from home, and the red walls of your den will act as a motivating force.

Yellow is a color that can have a few connotations. A pale yellow is a very calming and warm color, and can be great for a bedroom or kitchen. Pale yellow is soothing, but subtly happy. It is a comforting color to fall asleep to, or to relax in. Yellow is best used in small amounts, as an excessive amount of yellow or a very bright yellow can be overwhelming. A large amount of yellow has also been proven to incite anxiety, which is certainly something you want to avoid. For this reason, it is best to be careful about the amount and shade of yellow you choose.

Blue is a very common paint color, because it is often cited as people’s favorite color. Blue can result in many different types of moods, depending on the shade. A turquoise blue is a unique color that promotes happiness and creativity. A light blue is very calming and is often noted as a very serene color. This is a great choice for a bedroom, children’s room, or bathroom. Light blue is also a relaxing color choice for a living room.  Bright blue is a color shown to increase productivity and energy, so this is another great color choice for a den or home office. Dark blues tend to invoke more melancholy than happiness, so they are best avoided.

Green in any shade is a refreshing color choice for a room. Green is unique and interesting, without being overwhelming. It can evoke a warm or relaxed feeling, but can also be a motivating color, depending on the brightness of the shade. Light green can be soothing and result in an overall calmer tone for a room. Green is a great choice for either walls or accent pieces in rooms, because it will always stand out, but won’t necessarily be too overpowering.

Purple is another interesting color choice for a room. Long associated with royalty and luxury, purple is a unique and beautiful color choice for a room. Purple represents a deep and bold color choice, but is more sophisticated than tacky. Purple is a great choice for a den, dining room, or living room, as it can be thought provoking and put you in a contemplative mood.

It is extremely interesting to explore different color options for a room and to determine what moods they evoke. The paint color has a large effect on the overall mood and tone of a room so choose wisely!
