About Summit County
The town of Summit is a bustling, thriving suburban community and one of the most widely recognized and highly regarded areas in New Jersey. Due in part to its proximity and easy access to New York City, Summit experienced a great building boom post-WWII. This was because it became more common to live outside the city and commute to work. Summit was purchased from Native Americans in 1664, but the earliest European settlers didn’t arrive until around 1710. Originally named “Turkey Hill,” Summit became known as “Beacon Hill” during the Revolutionary War. This was because bonfire beacons were lit on an eastern ridge in Summit to warn militiamen of approaching British troops.
Present-day Summit offers its residents a plethora of fun cultural, historical, and nature-focused activities to enjoy. Founded in 1918 as a World War I relief organization, the Summit Playhouse is a non-profit community theatre which has featured over 300 live dramatic productions.
