Feng Shui and Paint Colors

Feng Shui design

Feng shui is a historical idea that is thousands of years old. Earliest records place it during the Chinese Tang Dynasty. Feng shui is all about creating and maintaining vital energy flow in the home. Good or positive fung shui is said to result in good luck, while negative fung shui results in misfortune. It is based on the idea that energy should constantly be flowing and being refreshed. The theory warns against negative energy, energy that is trapped somewhere in the home. Trapped energy creates a stagnation and a phenomenon called “stuck energy”. The theory of feng shui says that this trapped energy in the home soon will manifest as a blocked energy in an area of your life. Positive fung shui  is said to result in a healthy, flourishing life.

The first step to creating a positive energy flow in the home is to de-clutter your space. Clear away items that you no longer use, or always think you will need but never actually do. These items are just taking up space and draining your home of its vital energy.

The main energy centers of the home are the bedroom, kitchen, and bathroom, so these are the rooms you should devote the most work towards.

Color is an extremely important aspect of feng shui in the home. An important concept to keep in mind when determining the best colors for positive energy is The Five Elements Theory. The theory says that the five elements- which are wood, fire, earth, metal, and water- interact amongst themselves in certain ways, some creating positive consequences and others creating negative consequences. Each element represents something different, and each element has its own corresponding colors.

The wood element represents healing, health, and growth. Colors that exemplify the wood element include shades of green and brown.

The color red is the strongest example of the Fire Element. The Fire Element represents passion, warmth, and energy. Other colors that are examples of Fire are orange and bright yellow.

The earth element represents balance and nourishment and is exemplified by beiges, light browns, and earth tones.

Metal is the element that represents sharpness and clarity. White and gray are examples of the metal element.

Finally, the water element represents calm, freshness, and ease. Blue and black are examples of this element.

There are multiple ways to bring whichever colors you desire into your home. Painting your walls is the most direct way, as it involves changing the largest amount of color in the room. But methods of interior design, such as adding a painting or other art that heavily features the desired color will also work. Furniture or accent pieces in that color can also be added. Even changing the color of your carpet is another way to change up the color feng shui of your home.

You can pick and choose from among these elements once you determine which of these qualities you are striving towards. You can combine multiple elements in one room until you achieve your own personal brand of perfect harmony.
